China has indicated that Taiwan must be completely taken over by China within a few years. Taiwan has agreements with the US and several other countries stating that it will receive aid if China actually attacks the island.
But... If we look at the US, how secure is that commitment of aid?
In fact, you know that any agreement with leaders like Trump, Putin, and Xi Jinping isn't worth the paper it's written on.
The best Taiwan can do is prepare so that China knows that attempting to conquer the island would be so expensive that it would simply be too expensive in every respect.
To this end, Taiwan must develop long-range weapons itself, because the question is whether the US will be willing to provide or use those weapons if China attacks.
Trump cannot be trusted, and neither can Putin and Xi.
A lesson the whole world should have learned by now.

Was talking about this very thing at work the other day.
The "One China" policy, while keeping the peace for the last 50 years has always been a schizophrenic policy, and really only sustainable if China remained militarily weak. Which in the last few decades it is definately not.
While it established a detant with China and alllowed them onto the world stage economy wise, and allowed the US's military industrial complex to sell weapons to Taiwan, it did nothing to solve the underlying political issue with China, and is a thorn in the side of the Communist party since their inception.
It will be interesting to see what happens when push comes to shove. None of the Asian Countries with the exception of Cambodia want China to a power in the South China Sea. A lot of bad blood there! Viet Nam would probabbly come down as one of our allies. (Bob Dylan's - A Simple Twist Of Fate).
In the end though - A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL DIE.
