Nick, relax... Sarcasm is my super power...

No one died and the mail I tossed as over 10 years old.

That's why I use this in HPT: -tooold 60

That gets rid of someones puke session. #-)

Now that you can have HDD that are soooooooooooooo big that you store soooooo much crap is funny AF. I recall paying $100 a Meg for RAM and now we load 32 GIGs into a system without blinking.

I was shocked to learn I had mail in a subdirectory that had mail that was that old.

BTW, I paid $500 for a 105 MEG HDD and I just slapped a new 500 GIG drive into a 20 YO computer with no thoughts on the matter.

I will hook a modem up in a few days!!!

HD space isn't the issue. Having a message base full of puked previous content is.

I was shocked to learn I had mail in a subdirectory that had mail that
    was that old.

I only keep 14 days on this system. But the message base has messages way older than that.

I'd love to get any archives of mail from the 90's to early 2000's.

To be honest I never knew about that subdirectory and the files it contained. Because it costs nothing for disc space now I probably have 15 copies of the same directory.

I have been on fido for over 30 years and all I had was bad mail from10 years ago is not bad. AND I did this without trying.

Ya, these were mail bundles re-named and set in some obscure subdirectory going back years and I just found it.

Anyway... I do have a new-old computer setup now... Windows 7 32Bit... Disc space is clean and ready to go. I will be adding a modem to it because the Zombie Apocalypse is near.

    More to come later...

    :surprised: look on face!

I didn't archive anything when I left in the early 90's.

I'd love to get any archives of mail from the 90's to early 2000's.

I'd bet most of it has gone to the great big bin in the sky!

Sadly it looks that way. The message storage formats are not exactly designed for digital hoarding.

We'll find out... We are a dying bread... Other than the fact I bought an older computer for $30 that had 32Bit Windows 7 on it. I did bump the RAM up to 8 from 4 and I did install a Digital SATA drive on it... I have a USR modem I paid 100s and 100s for years ago I'll be up and running in no time.

    Anyway...

This could explain FidoNETs decline with the lack of dial in service.

I'm just trying to meet the needs of the public.

I saw this happen when I was doing benchwork years ago, people who upgraded beyond 4gb with 32-bit and could not understand the "zero" improvement.

Well... Now I don't need a VM to run my old DOS games...

Anyway, I was shocked as to what was not backwards compatible with the what was/is "new".

And I did get it to read 6... And I spent like $10 or so dollars... and such negativity will not deter me from this project.

Maybe if Bill picks up the development of Windows 7 he can fix the limit on RAM... You recall he thought 640K was perfectly fine for computer users.

    I remain optimistic

Where the hell do you get a real telephone these days. Sometimes I'd like to have that little service if it didn't cost 500 dollars/month. :-/
