• SAVE Act

From Joseph Pereira@1:124/5016 to All on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 05:54:19

In the US, the SAVE Act has become law. You must show your birth certificate or passport to vote. This is very disadvantageous for women, because they almost always took their husband's surname, meaning their birth certificates are no longer valid. In the US, only 50% of residents have a passport. Women will therefore find out en masse that they cannot vote in November.

Nope. Not yet. But keep looking for stuff to be angry about.

It hasn't passed the senate yet, or been signed by Trump. While it is
disingenuous in the sense that it doesn't solve a material problem
(anyone, name a presidential election affected by illegal votes, or
better yet, document the number of cases of votes by illegal aliens?)

What it does do is pressure states to turn over voter rolls to DHS,
something the courts have overruled. It disenfranchises women voters,
as you've mentioned, and makes minorities in this country legally less
likely to vote due to misinformation and fears.

(And, you know ICE will be out in force at Blue election centers to
lessen the threat that illegal voters pose)

Poor people without proper documentation will be forced to pay for
copies of birth certificates, a de facto poll tax.

The Trump administration is closing down passport issuance at public
libraries, because when you want to force people to use passports or
other means of proof of citizenship, of course you MAKE IT HARDER TO
US CITIZENS TO OBTAIN THOSE DOCUMENTS.

And smug conservatives and MAGA respond with "I never had a problem
showing ID at a gas station or grocery store..."

Really? You've been asked to show PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP? No, you've been
asked to show proof of age or proof of identity.

It's all about disenfranchising voters. The administration has said as
    much!

still mad everyone made fun of you on dovenet for that? ;)

and anyways, to vote you have to show id. to REGISTER to vote you need your birth certificate. you're misrepresenting the conversation we had over there.

something the courts have overruled. It disenfranchises women voters,

you've made quite the whopper of a mistake here. why are "minorities in this country legally" voting at all? if that wasn't your intended meaning, why are you calling Americans "minorities in this country legally"? wtf? do you proof read what your AI spits out?

as far as women are concerned, the combination of a birth certificate and a marriage certificate is an established method of proving your identity. sites like this debunk the narrative that birth certificates *ever* need to be updated

    https://legalclarity.org/do-you-change-your-name-on-your-birth-certificate-afte r-marriage/

"A birth certificate is a legal document that captures details as they existed when you were born."

(And, you know ICE will be out in force at Blue election centers to
lessen the threat that illegal voters pose)

you already know that harassing voters is illegal. you also can't predict the future. are you fearmongering? are you sure you're not the one scaring people not to vote?

The Trump administration is closing down passport issuance at public
libraries, because when you want to force people to use passports or
other means of proof of citizenship, of course you MAKE IT HARDER TO
US CITIZENS TO OBTAIN THOSE DOCUMENTS.

"The State Department noted that 99% of the U.S. population lives within 20 miles of a designated passport processing location, such as a post office, county clerk's office or government-run library authorized to accept in-person passport applications."

it's funny, because PBS is very careful how they word their sad story:

"In Joyce's rural, south-central Pennsylvania district, the Marysville-Rye Library is one of only two passport facilities serving the 556-square-mile Perry County, according to the letter to Rubio. Now the county courthouse will be the only remaining option."

i looked and this library is in a lovely single family home neighborhood, surrounded by woods and far away from the poor. and the "only remaining option"? 15 minutes south in their actual city.

    ...

and in the end all of this is pointless anyways. because you can guarantee every single state that hates it so much will immediately bend over backwards to make all of this easier (and probably free). this is why you don't want to freak out about everything you hear.

But he has to misrepresent. Reality won't conform to his false Narrative, so he has to assert that Reality is wrong somehow.

    Your an idiot.

go to the DMV with your marriage license and show them that and they'll change your name.

You birth certificate will always reflect your name at birth.

Notify Social Security with your marriage license and they'll make the changes.

If you are getting married soon... Keep your name until after the election.

My wife and I took care of all this shortly after our wedding. It was very simple and easy - since it, literally, happens all the time.

It took some time with my wife... Latinas names are/can be different after marriage.

my wife's name Iluminada Arias Estevez (last name a combination of father and mother.

When she gets married she4 becomes Iluminada Arias de Schweier ... He husband's name get attached with a de between the 2 names.

This indicates, to those who care, that she's married... It means that she belongs to ME... funny AF.

Because she wanted to have the de Schweier added the powers to be made us do an actual legal name change... Once we did this we systematically went
through every thing and worked or way outward and now her ID reflects this.

3 countries see her as her married name. Her story is slightly different... had she just went with my last name or if she went with Arias Schweier we would not have had to do what we did. She would have went down to the DMV and showed her old license with her marriage certificate and they would have made the changes. The same with her passport and whatnot.

I wish the Republicans fought more for the people than they do.

Ya, the system is set up for a "normal" name change. More than that would require a bigger change.

    It could be worse.

My grandpa's born name was "John The Baptiste Arthur Lauzon". Needless to say, he went through life as "Art" :)

Well, he had a problem after Grandma died and he was getting all the paperwork in order. All the stuff was signed "Arthur Lauzon" but that wasn't his legal name. The lawyer said it was easier for grandpa to change his name than to re-do all the stuff.

Which brought him to the next problem: If you want to change your name in Michigan, and your parent(s) are still living, you need to get their permission. My great-grandpa lived to be over 100, so grandpa had to go to the nursing home and convince his father to sign off on the name change. :)

I wish the Republicans fought more for the people than they do.

I've said this before: The vast majority of people simply want to live their lives as they want without gov't interference.

The problem here is that the Republicans (mostly) agree with that and leave us alone. The Democrats are the ones who want to control us and tell us how to live.

That's why I vote person, not party. Right now we need representatives who will battle the socialists. But after they are defeated, we need people who will get out of our lives.
